This crop of feijoas ‘the biggest yet’

After worries that the dry summer would impact on this year’s feijoa crop, Gisborne growers have enjoyed the biggest crop yet. … They have produced some of the biggest feijoas in the district – one weighing in at 325 grams when The Herald called and, since then, an even bigger one weighing 330 gm. … The Mills first planted feijoas in 2002 over 0.75 of a hectare.

Feijoa star of show at Whanganui’s Feijoabulous Festival

On top of the usual feijoa-flavoured delights and competitions, Whanganui’s fourth feijoa festival will feature some fruit-themed music and dancing. … Lyn Pearson, of Sustainable Whanganui, said this year’s event will feature a piano accordion player who has adapted some songs to include feijoas in them and there will be a “hokey tokey with feijoas”. … People are invited to take a feijoa dish to share, along with the recipe.

She says “They make a great addition to sweet and savoury salads, add a sweet-and-sour note to meat and poultry dishes, and are good in muffins, cakes and puddings. They are a good source of fibre (more than twice the fibre of apples), as well as containing useful amounts of betacarotene and minerals like sodium, magnesium, calcium and iron. They also contain high levels of phenolic compounds, which are thought to help reduce atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries)”
